Ivorian star Didier Drogba has joined the leadership of the Williamsville Athletic Club (WAC), Ivorian first division club, told AFP Tuesday the club president.
« He has been an integral part of the club’s steering committee since 2 December, when he was in Abidjan (at the AU-EU summit). We are happy to have with us a leading figure in the world of football, « told AFP Abackar Koné, the president of WAC.
« Didier Drogba had already been working for two years with the sports company responsible for the WAC’s administrative and financial management. He decided to get 100% involved, « said Koné.
« Didier Drogba has brought us moral and financial aid so far. Now, he will get more involved in the organization of the club, helping us to make him truly professional with his high level experience. We are only at the beginning of a project that should benefit our club and also Ivorian football, « he said.
« In partnership with the Didier Drogba Foundation, we will very soon begin the work of a sports complex on the side of Grand Bassam (seaside resort about thirty kilometers east of Abidjan) on an area of 13 hectares. With an institute called Dider Drogba that will be entirely under his responsibility, « said Koné.
The complex will also be a training center with « young residents who will combine sport with education, with education ranging from primary to higher education, » he says.
The center will have « three playgrounds, two of them synthetic (for training), a stadium of 5000 seats » but also classrooms.
« We will finalize soon with Drogba the raising of funds, and we must estimate the duration of work over two years, » he said.
WAC, a team from Williamsville, a neighborhood in Adjamé, Abidjan, was established in 1995 and is competing in the Champions League next year, having finished second in the Championship for its elite debut last season. .
