Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told the BBC he had been invited by Liberia’s new president, George Weah, to his inauguration at the end of the month.
Arsene Wenger was the manager of Weah in Monaco between 1988 and 1992 but he is not sure he can attend.
« I was invited by George Weah to come the day he will be the president, » he said.
« I think I’ll be busy but if I’m suspended (for his comments on the referees), I’ll have time to go. »
Wenger faces a disciplinary hearing of the Football Association for several comments he has made about referees in recent weeks. Arsenal boss admits he still has a hard time believing what Weah has achieved.
« The life of this guy is a real movie, it’s amazing, it can make a fantastic movie, » said Wenger.
« I remember when I saw him for the first time in Monaco, a little lost, not knowing anyone, being ranked by no one as a player and becoming the best player in the world in 1995 and now becoming president of his country, « he continued.
Wenger also recalled the passion and love that Weah had for Liberia.
« I went with George during the period when there was the war in Liberia and I saw how much he suffered for his country, » said Wenger.
« It was the thing that was continuous in his country, the love for his country and for his people. Today, when I look back, I see him crying when the war was in Liberia, so it’s a happy story. I hope he has a happy presidency and I would like to say that this guy is an example for all those who play football today. « , Concluded Arsenal manager.
