Tottenham vs Chelsea
Date: Sun, Aug 20, 17 @4pm
Venue: Wembley Stadium
There will be a football war as Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea clash in the first London derby of the season.
The two city rivals are set to do some serious battle with each other at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Lilywhites began their 2017/18 campaign on a very good note by beating Newcastle United 2-0 away last weekend.
While on the part of the Blues, they started their Premier League title defense with a shock 3-2 defeat to Burnley.
The Blues capitulated against the Clarets right at Stamford Bridge last week Saturday despite trying to come back from 3-0.
Chelsea gaffer, Antonio Conte had urged his charges to embark on a perfect defense of their Premier League title.
Furthermore, the Italian tactician had insisted that the West Londoners plan to improve on their title-winning displays of last season.
He wanted the Blues to avoid the mistakes they made during their most recent title defence during the 2017/18 season.
Conte said he wanted to avoid becoming the latest title-winning manager to get the sack but he started with defeat.
The Italian now has to correct his mistakes against Burnley with a pretty difficult encounter against Tottenham of all teams.
In the corresponding fixture last season, the North London outfit beat Chelsea 2-0 with a brace from midfielder, Dele Alli.
But that game held at White Hart Lane which is Spurs’ traditional home but Sunday’s match is set for Wembley.
Tottenham have, however, always found Wembley a tough hunting ground and they also lost to Chelsea right there last season.
That was in the FA Cup and Spurs have been very impressive in the EPL which makes for an interesting fixture.
Tottenham will assess the fitness of right full-back, Kieran Trippier to ascertain if he could feature after an ankle injury.
But the trio of left full-back, Danny Rose (knee), winger Erik Lamela (hip) and forward, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou are still out.
Chelsea duo of skipper, Gary Cahill and attacking midfielder, Cesc Fabregas will miss the London derby due to a suspension.
Cahill got a straight red card against Burnley while Fabregas picked up two yellow cards against the same team.
The Blues could be without attacker, Pedro Rodriguez who is recovering from an ankle injury he suffered two weeks ago.
However, Victor Moses could reclaim his shirt at the wing-back position after serving a one-match ban.
Midfielder, Tiemoue Bakayoko could be in the Chelsea match-day squad for the first time after returning from a knee problem.
Chelsea play-maker, Eden Hazard who is also nursing an ankle injury is not yet fully fit, though.
This is the first Premier League game to hold at Wembley with the Stadium the 58th different ground to host an EPL clash.
Chelsea have lost only two of their last 17 games in every competition against Tottenham (W8, D7, L2).
But Spurs are yet to lose a Premier League London derby at home under manager, Mauricio Pochettino (W9, D4, L0).
Chelsea are the second team ever to lose their opening game of a season as the reigning Premier League champions.
They lost to Burnley last weekend while Leicester City lost 2-1 against Hull City last season.
Chelsea hope to avoid becoming the first reigning champions to lose their opening two outings of the following EPL campaign.
What the managers say
Mauricio Pochettino: “I am positive about the fixtures, our first match at Wembley will be Chelsea, our fans too will be excited.”
“It is tough playing against Chelsea but we are confident and now, we must apply everything and try to win.”
Antonio Conte: “We must have total focus on the pitch, on the game and try to do our best against Tottenham.
“We do not need to find excuses as we need to have a 100 per cent focus on the game.”
